now at eight megapixels up from five, shoots 1080p video and has an improved
lens and sensor. And then there's Siri, a voice-recognition software assistant
that Apple says can only run with the 4S's stronger processor.
WHAT'S
GOOD
Everything
new is good. Compared with running a fresh install of iOS 5 on an iPhone 4, the
A5 processor boosts performance across the whole operating system. It doesn't
blow the A4 chip out of the water, but in a touch interface, even small gains
in responsiveness as you swipe and tap from screen to screen make a huge
difference in your perception of speed.
I
can also verify the camera improvements are legit. Noise levels in low light
are still not as good as my S90 point and shoot, of course, but they're
significantly better than the iPhone 4, which was already pretty adept in low
light. In many more well-lit situations, image quality is actually getting
pretty close to a high-quality point and shoot when you're looking at the
photos on-screen. Colors are natural, tap-to-focus works, and with iOS 5's
lock-screen camera button and the option to use one of the volume buttons for
shutter release, the iPhone 4S is a pretty solid camera that you always have

And
then there's Siri. Early reviews were swept head over heels with her, but she
and I have had a bumpier start. Siri misunderstands what I'm saying fairly
often--I don't know if it's because I still have a hard time speaking naturally
to my phone, because it's what I think she wants? Maybe it's because I've never
in my life had a personal assistant, and I'm just not quite comfortable with
the social norms of such a luxury, and she can hear that in my voice. Or maybe
we just weren't meant to be?
But
generally speaking, I don't use voice control that often. This first week, my
brain often says "Hey, let's play with this new thing Siri" when I
need to look something up, but I can already feel the novelty wearing off--I'm
more comfortable with touch. Whether voice control becomes a long-term thing
for you is, like all relationships, a personal matter.
Otherwise,
everything that was great about the iPhone 4 remains great here: the design
(antenna problems have been improved, says Apple), the overall feel of the
thing in your hand and in your life. To me the 4S's build is unique in small
ways: When this phone buzzes, it reveals an interesting internal texture--like
there's soft wood inside,iphone 4 cover. It feels good. That might classify as the most
wishy-washy statement you'll read in a gadget review today, but that such a
thing registered to me as an improvement, or at least a change, shows how
personal the relationship we have with our phones has become.

Significant blocks of time transpire, however, where nothing resembling advertising passes through my company’s job queue, or past my desk. I checked again just to be sure. I peeled myself from my computer, where I’ve been engrossed in three hours of blurry-eyed internet research, finding better, more efficient and cost-effective promotional opportunities for clients, including SEO, PPC, RSS, forums, article submissions, directory listings, AdWords, search engine advertising (well, really not advertising, is it?), podcasting, blogging, webcasting, and on and on. Where did my time go?
Deciding that my work day was over,ipad bag, I left the office. Later, I walked into my living room to find my beautiful and charming wife lounged on the sofa reading Southern Living. She looked peaceful, blissful even, there flipping the pages and sipping her freshly brewed chai tea latte with milk and Splenda. I sat down beside her, silent, and observed as she lost herself in the magazine. A couple of times she uttered “what?” I said “Nothing. I’m just enjoying the quiet.”
She scanned it all, read some of it, including ads. She even turned down corners on some of the pages – “Must be a recipe,” I thought. Then it struck me: she’s been doing this since I met her,zagg ipad keyboard, even before that. She wasn’t lounged on the couch with a laptop computer diligently, wirelessly downloading web page after web page of 256-color heaven. And why not? I mean, ads in the online version of their print counterparts are much less intrusive on the reader. Right?

What I found was a confusing array of seemingly contradictory information from various sources, some known, many unknown. Some said magazine and dailies readership was going up due to the internet. The other side was saying, you guessed it, the opposite.
I shut down my computer.
I’m going with my intuition on this. My own experience has taught me that sometimes your hunch on going with one headline over another is dead-center. So, here I go.
Magazines - and even newspapers (despite recent decline) - and those who choose to advertise in them are not going anywhere. The names might change, but periodicals as a media form has made it into the stubborn fabric of our culture. We read. We like to look at things, and at our own pace. A magazine, in this light, is even more user friendly than a computer. No typing is required. No booting up is necessary. No downloads delay us, just a cup of your favorite brand of chai tea latte to sip between articles. Was this the same brand advertised in Southern Living? Probably.
So, I’ve come to the conclusion that the internet has created another media (despite many arguments that the internet is not a “media”). And, it offers many opportunities to disclose and distribute information, and promote a company, individuals, group, products and services. And it does so – brilliantly in some instances, and clumsily in others – just as other media…imperfectly.
But, as for print advertising? I believe that as time goes by, it will retain its importance in the marketing mix. In fact, I believe it will become more segmented and targeted, as the media that contain it and thrive on it, will continue to be forced to evolve.
In response to my travel advertising friend, who prophesied the death of television advertising…perhaps I’ll cover that in another article.

I will now begin to explain my own theory about these secrets, and how they relate to what is really happening in the world today. As it pertains to my theory, "invisible puzzle" more specifically refers to the deniable lines of function that are hidden inside the products and systems that we interact with. These invisible puzzles are there to control us in very direct tangible ways while shedding off proof of the real purposes behind them. For example, when the bank processes several checks in one day for a specific customer they now wait to the end of the day and sort them by size, biggest first, smallest last. Many people wait to the last minute to deposit their money, so an unsuspecting customer walks in during the day and deposits the amount to cover the checks, asks for his balance, and breathes a sigh of relief to see that he was in time. The balance according to the deposit slip is in the black. He goes home with the feeling that everything is in order. However, the checks that were held to the end of the day can be back-posted to a time before the deposit, since that is when they really came in. So the customer's account is then returned to the red prior to his deposit, as the checks that were not reflected before are back-posted. Then these checks get posted in size order instead of chronological order, causing the most possible overdrafts to be generated. Then as the overdraft fees stack up, the customer's account goes further negative than it would have otherwise, making the deposit ineffective at stopping subsequent overdrafts from the following day's checks. The customer's account spins out of control by potentially hundreds of dollars without his immediate knowledge so that he won't know in time to fix it before the full damage takes place. The combination of these things cause overdraft income to increase three to four times on average. And that's if he deposited cash. If he deposited a check then the deposit may post three days later (an arbitrary decision on the part of the bank) - and it doesn't matter if it抯 from a bank across the street. You could have just walked the cash across the street but that makes no difference to the bank. Sure, the bank can make any rule it wants, and the customer is legally at fault for letting his/her account go negative. But then the bank purposely manipulates their paperwork to triple their income from it. And they do it legally. How? All they had to do to triple their overdraft income was to issue a notice to their customers stating something to the effect: "From this point forward, in an effort to better serve our customers, whenever there are multiple checks to process in the same day we will process the biggest one first, the second biggest one second, and so on, processing the smallest one last. In this way if there are insufficient funds you are more likely to get your most important check through, such as your mortgage or car payment." This notice makes it impossible for the customer to accuse the bank of manipulating the paperwork for profit. The deniable alternate purpose (manipulation of paperwork to triple overdraft profits) is hidden behind a perception cloak (the statement that the change in calculations is to get your most important check through). As a result, this situation becomes an invisible puzzle. For example, when the bank processes several checks in one day for a specific customer they now wait to the end of the day and sort them by size, biggest first, smallest last. Many people wait to the last minute to deposit their money, so an unsuspecting customer walks in during the day and deposits the amount to cover the checks, asks for his balance, and breathes a sigh of relief to see that he was in time. The balance according to the deposit slip is in the black. He goes home with the feeling that everything is in order. However, the checks that were held to the end of the day can be back-posted to a time before the deposit, since that is when they really came in. So the customer's account is then returned to the red prior to his deposit, as the checks that were not reflected before are back-posted. Then these checks get posted in size order instead of chronological order, causing the most possible overdrafts to be generated. Then as the overdraft fees stack up, the customer's account goes further negative than it would have otherwise, making the deposit ineffective at stopping subsequent overdrafts from the following day's checks. The customer's account spins out of control by potentially hundreds of dollars without his immediate knowledge so that he won't know in time to fix it before the full damage takes place. The combination of these things cause overdraft income to increase three to four times on average. And that's if he deposited cash. If he deposited a check then the deposit may post three days later (an arbitrary decision on the part of the bank) - and it doesn't matter if it抯 from a bank across the street. You could have just walked the cash across the street but that makes no difference to the bank. Sure, the bank can make any rule it wants, and the customer is legally at fault for letting his/her account go negative. But then the bank purposely manipulates their paperwork to triple their income from it. And they do it legally. How? All they had to do to triple their overdraft income was to issue a notice to their customers stating something to the effect: "From this point forward, in an effort to better serve our customers, whenever there are multiple checks to process in the same day we will process the biggest one first, the second biggest one second, and so on, processing the smallest one last. In this way if there are insufficient funds you are more likely to get your most important check through, such as your mortgage or car payment."
